The Table Tennis World Cup is one of the three major table tennis tournaments in the world, along with the Olympic Games and the World Table Tennis Championships.

The World Cup tournament is divided into a first stage group round robin and a second stage knockout tournament. 1-8 seeds advance directly to the knockout tournament, while 9-20 seeds (12 players in total) are divided into 4 groups of 3 players each through a draw to play a group round robin tournament. The top 2 players from each group will advance to the second phase of the knockout stage. The tournament utilizes a 7 games to 4 wins system.

The Men's World Cup tournament was founded in 1980 and all titles were split between Chinese and European players, with the Chinese winning 18 titles and the Europeans 14. Until 2016 when Japan's Mayu Hirano won the singles title.

Differences: The World Series consists of seven events: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles, and men's and women's teams; the Olympics consists of four events: men's and women's singles and teams; and the World Cup consists of four events: men's and women's singles and teams (held separately).

Held in Hong Kong, China in 1996, the top tournament has remained an annual tradition except for 1999 when it was discontinued due to sponsorship. 2012 Women's World Cup was held in Huangshi, China, with a total of $150,000 in prize money.
