Kings History
5 name changes
The Kings have had the most name changes in NBA history, changing their name five times. The team was called the Rochester Royals from 1948 to 1957, the Cincinnati Royals from 1957 to 1972, the Kansas City-Omaha Kings from 1972 to 1975 when the team moved west, and the Kansas City Kings from 1975 to 1985 when the team relocated to Sacramento and officially changed its name to the Sacramento Kings, which it has remained to this day!
Since relocating to Sacramento in '85, the Kings entered the playoffs in the first round of the '85-86 season and were defeated by the Rockets
Sweep. After that season, the Kings didn't make the playoffs again until the '95-'96 season, nine years later, but they only won one game in the first round before going out. It wasn't until '98 when the Kings traded for Webber and brought in White Chocolate, Peja, and Divac that the team got off to a good start.
In the 98-05 season, the Kings made the playoffs for the eighth year in a row, and in the 01-02 season, the Kings finished first in the league with a record of 61 wins and 21 losses, and in the playoffs made it to the Western Conference Finals and the Lakers.
The team lost in 7 games. Since the 01-02 season the Kings have only made the playoffs in the previous few seasons however have only broken the first round twice.
