RB Leipzig and Austria midfielder Schlager will miss this year's Europa League after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Hoffenheim.
The Bundesliga club said Schlager, 26, was substituted in the 16th minute on Friday after injuring his left knee and will miss several months while undergoing surgery.
"The news comes as a shock to all of us, especially to Xaver," Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder said Saturday.
"He is a key player in our team and has been enjoying a strong season so far, which he hopes to crown by playing at Euro 2024."
