It was West Germany. The German team split into West and East Germany after World War II, with West Germany having suffered a 3-8 defeat to Hungary in the group stage of the 1954 FIFA World Cup in Switzerland, before turning around to 3-2 opponents in the final, in what became known as the Miracle of Berne.

The 2022 World Cup has seen tragedies become commonplace due to the greater level of soccer development in each country, and in the 1954 World Cup, Hungary was almost a tragedy maker, with two group stage matches in which they beat South Korea 9-0, and West Germany 8-3, to finish first in their group, back when a win in a soccer match was still only 2 points. West Germany vs Hungary was the second round of Group 2. In the first round, West Germany beat Turkey 4-1. But never thought that the original strong duel turned into a one-sided, Hungary in the first half of the absolute lead of 4-1, the second half of the opening Hidayguti's double to make the game completely out of suspense, Cochise's big four let the Germans see what is a superstar. In the end, West Germany lost 3-8 to Hungary in the group stage.

After the group stage Hungary continued to soar, while West Germany beat Turkey again in the play-offs to reach the knockout stage. In the knockout rounds, Hungary faced little pressure, and with superstars Puskás and Kocsis, they were invincible, winning 4-2 in the quarterfinals against Brazil, who did not yet have Pele. In the semi-final against Uruguay, the 1950 World Cup champions, Hungary and their opponents fought to extra time, and thanks to the extra time Kocsis scored twice to finally enter the final.

On the other side of the final, West Germany didn't let the group stage shock go to their head, and they regained their confidence with a 7-2 win over Turkey in the play-offs, a 2-0 win over Yugoslavia in the quarter-finals, and a 6-1 win over Austria in the semi-finals, with the shadows of the group stage seemingly casting their shadow over them.

After the group stage, Hungary, with their superstars, didn't take West Germany seriously. Puskás gave Hungary the lead in the 6th minute, and two minutes later Ziebell scored again, but West Germany equalized before half-time with a goal each from Molok and Rahn. In the final moments of the match, Rahn completed the shutout in the 84th minute, and West Germany won their first ever World Cup, which has been dubbed "The Miracle of Berne" for its legendary status. Due to the legendary nature of the match, it was played in Bern, Switzerland, so it was known as the "Miracle of Bern", and the German team also conceded the most goals in a single match in the World Cup so far.
