Recently, legendary Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke questioned former teammate Wayne Rooney's coaching ability in public. Yorke said that despite being given several coaching opportunities, Rooney has not lived up to expectations.
In the interview, Yorke was blunt: "Rooney has been given a lot of opportunities to coach, but unfortunately he's hardly ever had a decent record. We all want to defend his coaching record as much as possible, but the facts are out there and he really needs to do better."
Yorke singled out Rooney's start in charge at Plymouth as an opportunity to really show his coaching ability, but sadly he didn't take advantage of it. "He's still off to a poor start at Plymouth, which worries me about his future coaching prospects." York added.
Yorke also pointed out that Rooney has a large number of supporters in soccer circles, but that does not excuse his poor coaching record. "He has to improve and he has to give something back. He's had plenty of platforms to prove his ability but he's not done any of them." York emphasized.
Regarding Rooney's future, Yorke said he still maintains some confidence, but he also warned, "If this continues then he may not be very fit to be a coach. He will have to prove that he is capable and qualified to be a coach, and in time he will always be told the truth and whether he has the credentials to be a coach."
Plymouth will face QPR away in the Championship on August 24th at 19:30pm BST. In the previous two rounds of the league, Rooney's team only achieved a draw and a loss, which undoubtedly casts a shadow over his coaching career. York's words are a wake-up call for Rooney, who needs to prove his coaching ability by leading his team to better results in the coming matches.
