Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson recently shared in a candid interview about the challenges and perseverance he has experienced due to injuries since March this year. The loyal Scotland international said that despite playing with injuries for long periods of time, he is gradually getting back to fitness after working tirelessly.
Robertson recalled the game against Ipswich with a hint of relief and comfort in his words, "In that game, I felt I was in pretty good shape. In fact, I had been struggling with an injury since March, but I didn't give up and chose to continue contributing to the team." He confessed that that period was crucial for both the club and the national team, so he chose to endure the pain and stick to the field.
However, Robertson also acknowledged that the initial optimistic estimate - that he would recover with three weeks' rest - did not go as he had hoped. Instead, it took him longer to recover and adjust. "During pre-season, I was unable to play alongside my teammates, but I was never far away from the team. I stayed fit by all means, even though the process was full of frustration and disappointment." He emphasized that even when he was unable to play, he actively participated in team meetings and learned from the coaches to ensure that he was always with the team mentally.
Talking about the new tactical philosophy brought by new head coach Jürgen Klopp's assistant coach Slaughter, Robertson said the whole team is actively adapting and learning. "We know that change always comes with challenges and opportunities. Slotter's arrival has brought us a different way of playing and thinking, which will take time and patience to understand and master."
Encouragingly, Robertson has been feeling pain-free in recent matches for a long time: "On Saturday, I felt a sense of relief and ease that I haven't felt in five months. It was a positive sign of my physical state. Although I chose to take a break in the last 10 minutes, it was purely to better manage my fitness - after all, fatigue is inevitable after a long period of fighting with an injury. I look forward to this good physical condition continuing."
An integral part of Liverpool, Robertson's tenacity and perseverance has certainly set an example for the team. The 30-year-old has made 298 appearances for the Reds, contributing 11 goals and 65 assists. With his body gradually recovering, fans have reason to believe that Robertson will continue to fight for Liverpool's glory in future matches.
