After two rounds of away league games, my old bosses, the Newcastle Jets, will set up their home ground on Sunday to face the Western Sydney Wanderers.
So far, the Jets have only tied with Perth Glory and have one point in their pocket, but I think the best thing about them is that they are capable of scoring multiple goals. A total of 5 goals in their 2 league matches proves that they are doing well on the offensive side of the ball, and with young midfielder Keaton Taylor racking up 2 goals, they are off to a good start in their first season in the A-League.
However, their defense is too easy to be broken down by the opponents, they conceded 7 goals in two rounds of league matches against Perth Glory and Melbourne Victory, and last week they lost 3-5 to Melbourne Victory, and the opponents often gained the advantage on the side, so I'm sure that the Jets players will be more forceful and quick to tackle the opponents, in order to prevent the opponents from making the passes.
On the other hand, Western Sydney Wanderers' defense, led by Brazilian defender Marcelo Antonio, has been doing very well, and my ex-teammate when I played for the Jets, Bill Randt, who plays as a defensive midfielder, has also made a barrier in front of the defense, forming a defensive five, which makes it difficult for the opponents to break through them, and therefore I'm not surprised that they haven't conceded a goal so far in the first half of the season.
Birante has been instrumental in filling the gaps in the defense and preventing the opposition's creative players from making passes to the strikers, playing a key role in WSL's attack and defense. If he is able to take control of the midfield, then the two side players who scored two goals each against Western Union, Lajlanbrook and Nicolas Milanovic, should have a chance to start the attack.
