In an interview with Ruhr News, soccer pundit Thomas Helmer gives insight into the recent transfer developments, season outlook and the arrival of new head coach Shaheen at Borussia Dortmund.
Helmer was highly critical of Borussia Dortmund's operations in the summer transfer window. He pointed out that although the team lost a player with spiritual leadership like Phil Kruger, the introduction of Maximilian Bayer is undoubtedly a wonderful signing. If Girassi can stay healthy, then Dortmund will have two trustworthy scorers, which will greatly enhance the team's offensive firepower. According to Helmer, this series of reinforcements sends a strong signal to other competitors that Dortmund is eager to return to the top and vows not to repeat last season's fifth-place finish. He emphasized that the team should aim higher, i.e., to continue to show competitiveness throughout the season and strive to be at the top of the table.
When asked about his expectations for Dortmund this season, Helmer was outspoken in stating that finishing in the top four of the league is a goal the team must achieve. He also raised questions about the team's stamina, wondering if the young and energetic squad will be able to stay focused and competitive enough to handle the fierce competition for the top spot in the table over the course of a long season.
As for the new head coach Shaheen, Helmer showed some caution and expectation. He admitted that the rapid transition from assistant coach to head coach is rare in the top league, and therefore makes Shaheen one of the most challenging candidates. Helmer noted that Şahin's relative lack of experience as a head coach could create some uncertainty and challenges for the team. However, he also sees the opportunity behind the appointment and believes that Şahin has the chance to prove his worth at Dortmund and have a fruitful coaching career ahead. Helmer called for enough time and space for Şahin to develop his coaching style, believing that he will be able to lead the team to gradually overcome the difficulties and achieve higher goals.
Finally, talking about the departure of veterans such as Royce and Hummels, Helmer believes that this is an inevitable process in the soccer world. He said that the club's choice to develop young players and inject fresh blood is a move in line with the law of development, and he believes that these young players will be able to take on the responsibility of their predecessors and contribute to the future of the team.
