A day after 2019 world champion Judd Trump went out in the second round, current champion Brecher lost 4-2 in the round of 32 to Martin O'Donnell, who ended the tournament with a break of 82.
Four-time Crucible champion Selby fell to a 4-3 defeat in Edinburgh this year, knocked out by Matthew Septer.
Another former world champion, John Higgins, was taken the distance by Ricky Walden before advancing. Ding lost 4-3 to Tom Ford, while Ali Carter was the other man knocked out of the tournament, losing 4-2 to Nopon Sangkan.
Earlier in the day in the second round, defending champion Gary Wilson advanced with a 4-3 win over Xing Zihao, while Karen Wilson cleaned up for her opponent with Jordan Brown.
Aaron Hill will face Stuart Bingham in the third round on Thursday afternoon.
The Cork native reached the last 32 after defeating Jack Lisowski on Tuesday.
