Spanish newspaper Daily Sport broke the news that Barcelona has offered a 2-year contract with an annual salary of 25 million euros (about HK$210 million) to the 35-year-old Argentine footballer to return to the club. Although Barcelona's offer is not as generous as that of Saudi Arabian giants Hilal, the club believes that Mez will agree to join the club for the sake of playing at the top level of the European game.
It is reported that Barcelona will continue to streamline its roster this summer, freeing up 120 million euros (about HK$1 billion) in salary space, so that the club can register a new generation of starters such as Gavi and Ronnie Anaozio, as well as accommodating Mez.
