Wolverhampton Wanderers were founded in 1877 and won the FA Cup three times in 1893, 1908 and 1949. In the 1950s, Wolves won three First Division titles and achieved good results in Europe. However, Wolves started to decline in the late 1970s, and the club had financial problems. In 1984, the club was relegated from the top flight of the First Division, and within two years, the club was relegated twice, and in 1986, the club was relegated to the fourth tier of the D-League. The club was relegated to the fourth division in 1986. Although Wolves were promoted back to the second division in 1989, they were unable to qualify for promotion back to the top flight for more than a decade after that. Since the establishment of the Premier League, Wolves have been promoted to the Premier League three times:
The first was in 2003, but returned to the Championship the following year with a bottom of the Premier League table finish.
The second time was 2009, and this time Wolves were relegated for the second consecutive term, but returned to the Championship in 2012 with a bottom-of-the-table finish in the Premier League, before dropping to League One the following year, the second of back-to-back relegations, only to win the title and return to the Championship just one season later.
Wolves won the Championship in 2017/18.
