In the third round of the English Premier League on Saturday night, Manchester City managed to beat West Ham United with a score of 3-1, achieving three consecutive wins to start the new season. After the match, youngster Rico Lewis was interviewed by the club's officials, sharing his thoughts on the match and his personal performance.
Fantasy start, stay humble
Rico Lewis could not hide his joy at the great result his team achieved. "Everyone is very happy, we got the result we wanted, nine points out of nine, couldn't have asked for a better start." He admitted that the team had not become complacent despite the three consecutive wins. "The season has only just started and it's easy to get complacent, but we've been very convincing and that's the most important thing." Rico Lewis also expressed his expectations for the outlook of the season, saying that the team needs to continue to perform at this high level.
Personal Growth and Appreciation
Speaking about his individual performance, Rico Lewis said he is enjoying every moment on the pitch. "I said at the start of the season that I just wanted to get on the pitch as much as possible and luckily I played in all three games and now I'm enjoying playing soccer." He gave special thanks to the coach for the trust and support he has given him, "I'd like to thank the coach for letting me join the first team, it's up to me to maintain a high level of consistency with the team and I'm really happy about that."
Learn from Walker and play to your character
Speaking about working with and learning from the team's veteran Walker, Rico Lewis had high praise. "It's amazing, in my opinion, Walker is one of the best wing-backs in the world right now, even if it might not be the best wing-back in the history of the Premier League." He admits that Walker's defensive ability, physicality and dominance are far superior to his own, but the pair also have their own qualities. "We're all different players and that's what you see throughout the team - different players in different positions and offering different things." Rico Lewis said he will continue to learn from Walker and work on his own character.
The glory of being named in the England squad
Finally, Rico Lewis also spoke about how he feels about being named in the England squad. "I'm very happy to be named in the England squad, but more importantly, I was able to play in all three matches before the break and that's all I wanted." He said that being called up to the England squad is an honor for him and a recognition of his past efforts. He is looking forward to meeting his national teammates and playing together for England's glory.
