Di Maria began his professional career in 2005 with Argentine Primera Division side Rosario Central. He represented Argentina U-20 at the 2007 World Youth Football Championship, where he excelled and helped the Argentine team win the title. Di Maria's impressive performances attracted the attention of several European clubs, and he eventually chose Portuguese Super League side Benfica.
After joining Benfica, Di Maria quickly adapted to the team and soon settled into a starting role, and in October 2009, signed a new contract with Benfica until June 30, 2015, with a default payment of 40 million euros.
