Born in Madrid, Rodri joined the youth academy of Mahadayonda Lightning at the age of 10, and a year later moved to Atlético de Madrid's youth academy, where he stayed until 2013, when he left due to a "lack of physical strength" and joined Villarreal's squad.
Rodri was promoted to the Yellow Submarine first team for the 2015-16 season, with his first-team debut coming on December 17, 2015 at the King's
