Called by former NBA superstar Allen Iverson, Ace Cooper & Jeff Kovatinetz launch on January 11, 2017 Famous rapper Ace Cooper has always wanted to create a basketball league separate from the NBA, and after Kobe's retirement this idea became even stronger, resulting in the BIG3 league.
Participants: Only retired players are allowed to participate, which has attracted the participation of many retired NBA stars, such as Arians, Odom, "Old Cat" Mobley, "Captain" Jackson and others.
Team Composition and System of Play:
Each team consists of 5 players and 1 coach (coaches can double as coaches).
The tournament is divided into regular season, playoffs, and finals. Teams do not play home and away, and games are played in a different ballpark each week.
Contest Rules:
SCORING METHOD: The rules for 2 and 3 point shots are similar to the NBA, but using the NBA's 3-point line. In addition, three "4-point circles" are set up, and any shot that touches any part of the circle is scored 4 points.
Offense Time: 14 seconds per offense.
Foul Free Throws: If a shot is fouled and still hits, an extra free throw will be awarded; if the shot is fouled and does not hit, the number of free throws will be the number of points missed (2, 3, and 4 points).
OTHER RULES: All personal fouls are counted as team fouls, but there is no foul-out rule; after the 5th foul in each half, each foul gives the opponent 2 free throws. The first team to score 60 (or more) points wins, with the winning team netting at least 2 points, and if there is no winner, the game will be played for a maximum of 30 minutes; when a team scores 30 (or more) points, the game goes to halftime, etc.
Development history:
On June 26, 2017, the first game of the U.S. BIG3 League kicked off at the Barclays Center in New York City. There were eight teams in the inaugural season of the league, and Kenyon Martin led the Trilogy to win the inaugural BIG3 League title.
In 2019, the third season of the BIG3 league saw an increase from the original eight teams to 12.
As of January 2024, there have been six seasons of the American BIG3 League, and on August 19, 2024, the Bivouac team, coached by Gary Payton, Sr. and featuring Gerald Green and Corey Brewer, defeated the 3's Company team, featuring Michael Beasley and Chalmers, in the BIG3 League Championship game, 50-47!
