(FIFA has put pressure on the eight World Cup stadiums to ban the sale of alcohol. FIFA officially announced on Friday (18) that no alcohol would be allowed to be sold in any of the World Cup stadiums, with the consequence of millions of pounds in sponsorship compensation.

The World Cup is being held in a Muslim country for the first time, making it illegal to drink alcohol in public in Qatar, which has long been a habit of football fans. Qatar has been at loggerheads with FIFA over the ban, which last week agreed to remove beer sponsors' advertisements from less prominent spots in the stadium.

The latest ban on alcohol has been issued, announcing that beer sales will be banned in all eight stadiums during the World Cup in Qatar. Even Budweiser, the official sponsor of the World Cup, will not be allowed to sell beer, and only Budweiser Zero, a non-alcoholic beverage, will be allowed to be consumed, so fans will have an alcohol-free World Cup.

Prior to that, the official World Cup fan guide stated that three hours before the start of the game and one hour after the game, all ticketed fans could enjoy Budweiser around the stadium, and dozens of beer tents were set up around the stadium.

Following pressure from the Qatari royal family, FIFA announced a ban on alcohol. During the ban, the only place to drink in the stadium is in the $22,450 VIP box, or in a luxury hotel, which is very expensive at $11.26 for 330ml of beer.

However, FIFA has already signed a huge sponsorship deal with Budweiser for the World Cup, and now that the ban has been temporarily implemented, FIFA will face a multi-million pound breach of contract claim.
