City Football Group, abbreviated CFG, is a holding company that manages soccer clubs. The group is jointly owned by three consortiums, including 81% owned by lead investor Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG), 18% owned by Silver Lake Investment Group, and 1% jointly owned by Chinese Culture Industry Investment Fund and China CITIC Group.
Manchester City (including the women's team): In the summer of 2008 the intention was to acquire Manchester City Football Club from former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin. Following the successful acquisition, Manchester City undertook a comprehensive review of all departments in order to rise to the top as quickly as possible. Manchester City spent £10 million on refurbishing their youth academy base. They developed plans to build a £100 million training and academic facility on land opposite the stadium, looking at training facilities around the world to try and create the world's most significant development in the sector.In 2014 they announced that they had been granted planning permission to increase the capacity of the stadium to more than 62,000, which made it the second largest club stadium in England. Further investment has come in the area of fan engagement, with City committed to a policy of winning global awareness competitions through a massive display of social media.
Manchester City Women's Football Club was founded in 1988, but until August 2012 they existed only as an external subsidiary of the club, with little shared resources and no control over the management of the club by the City Football Group. It wasn't until four years after the acquisition of City that the two sides finally signed an agreement in which the affiliated women's soccer club would come under City's full control and effectively become part of the same organization.
New York City: On May 21, 2013, it was officially announced that New York City F.C. became the 20th club to join Major League Soccer. MELBOURNE CITY: City Football Group's ownership of the club was announced on January 23, 2014, with the news that Manchester City had acquired the then Heart of Melbourne for $12 million. After several days of talks in Melbourne and Sydney, City executives completed the deal, which saw them own 80% of the Australian club. The City Football Group additionally acquired another 20% stake held by a consortium of businessmen aligned with Australian Union style rugby club Melbourne Fury.
Montevideo City Torque Football Club: on April 5, 2017, City Football Group announced that it had acquired Torque Athletic Football Club, which currently plays in the Uruguayan Uruguayan Football First Division.
Girona: On August 23, 2017, City Football Group announced that it had acquired a 44.3% stake in Spanish Primera Division soccer team Girona Football Club. Girona Football Group holds the other 44.3% stake in the team, which is led by Pere Guardiola, brother of Manchester City FC manager Pep Guardiola.
Shenzhen New Pengcheng: On February 20, 2019, City Football Group (33% of the shares), Shenzhen Ubiquitous Technology Co., Ltd. and Jiaxing Jianteng Peisheng Equity Investment Fund Partnership set up the tripartite Sichuan Ubiquitous City Sports Industry Development Limited Liability Company, jointly acquiring 90% of the shares of Sichuan JiuNiu Football Club, with a total shareholding of 29.7% held by City Football Group.On March 2022 On March 16, 2022, Shenzhen Ubiquitous Technology Co., Ltd. withdrew, and City Football Group held 46.6667% of the shares. on January 24, 2024, Sichuan Jiuniu Football Club applied to change the registered member association from Sichuan Football Association to Shenzhen Football Association; on February 6, 2024, Sichuan Jiuniu Football Club Limited Liability Company was renamed as Shenzhen Xinpengcheng Football Club Co. .
MUMBAI CITY: City Football Group announced on Thursday, November 28, 2019 that it has become a major shareholder of Mumbai City Football Club after acquiring a 65% stake in the club.
