Playing career:
Frick is a midfielder from the Sandhausen training camp in Germany. He has played for Sandhausen, Bayern Munich, Köln and Vitoria Barmenthal.
During his 5 years at Bayern, he played 104 Bundesliga matches, scoring 5 goals and helping Bayern win 4 Bundesliga titles, 1 German Cup and 1 German Supercup.In 1987, Frick played as a mainstay with Bayern in the final of the Champions League, but lost 1-2 to Portugal's Porto, and did not win the title.
Frick was selected for the U18 national team of West Germany (known as the Federal Republic of Germany, which merged with the German Democratic Republic in 1990 to form the current Germany) in 1983, and played in the UEFA European Youth Football Championships in England, earning appearances against Sweden and Bulgaria.

While coaching Hoffenheim, he passed the soccer coaching training exam at the Sport University in Cologne, Germany, and graduated with the highest score.In July 2006, Frick went to Austrian First Division side Red Bull Salzburg as an assistant to the Italian manager Trapattoni as well as the team's coordinator, though he left the job to accept an offer from the German Football Association (DFB) after just two months.

In September 2006, Frick was hired as an assistant coach to support Löw, who had just been promoted to German manager.
