In an interview with Kicker, soccer great Mertesacker was confident about Germany's performance in the upcoming Europa League and he believes that manager Nagelsmann can lead his team far.
Mertesacker pointed out that Germany's excellent performance in the March tournament, with victories over France and the Netherlands, had changed the team's momentum and confidence: "The whole wind has changed, which is very noticeable. Everything after the losses to Turkey and Austria five months ago, all of it was completely forgotten at once."
He praised Nagelsmann for the changes he has taken in the team, "Nagelsmann made the changes after a lot of thought, and it really, really worked. Everyone had the impression that the team could grow together even in the midst of individual levels of play."
On his goals for this year's Euros, Mertesacker said, "For a big soccer nation like Germany, our goal should be to become at least one of the top four in Europe. If we manage to advance in at least two knockout rounds, then we can say it was a successful tournament."
Speaking about Germany's roster, he doesn't think it will change much from March, "I don't expect this lineup to change much from what we had in March. I think this lineup is very balanced because we are well equipped in every position."
As hosts, Germany will face Scotland in Munich on June 14, and their other two group stage opponents are Switzerland and Hungary.
