Varane's departure would be a landmark event in the Manchester United era. The introduction of star players has always been something that fans have been proud of, and the Premier League transfer fee record is constantly being broken. On Wednesday, Varane will bid farewell to the fans in United's final home game of the season, which could also be United's farewell to the way they sign star players.

Varane, 31, whose contract with United expires next month, left as a free agent after a three-year spell. He joined United from Real Madrid for a transfer fee of £42.7million at the time, which included an add-on fee. In addition, the final home game could also be Casemiro's farewell match, with an offer having been made to him by the Saudi League side.

Manchester United have had arguably the most wasteful spending in the Premier League over the last decade. A plethora of signings in the post-Ferguson era did not yield the desired results, with Di Maria winning the World Cup after leaving United. Pogba broke the Premier League record for a transfer fee but ended up leaving on a free. Romelu Lukaku joined United from Everton for a transfer fee of £75 million, but the results were disappointing. In contrast, Menu and Gancho, who have come through the United youth system, have impressed.

Ten Hahn recently said that even if Manchester United do not qualify for Europe next season, they will still be an attractive club. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the Inglis group will continue to support United's big spending on reinforcements, as they seem to be more focused on value for money.
