Contracts and Safeguards Issues:

The Pelicans extended Zion's contract early in July 2022 for five years and $197 million, effective the start of the 2022-23 season. The final three years of the contract, $126.5 million, will become unguaranteed as Zion will only play 29 games that season. The contract stipulates that the clause is triggered by missing more than 22 games in the 2022-23 season, and that the 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28 seasons become non-guaranteed salaries.
