FAMILY BACKGROUND: Father Dwight Sr. is a Georgia State Patrol trooper and athletic director at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, a private high school and national high school powerhouse in basketball. Mother Cheryl was one of the first women's basketball players at Morris Brown College. Howard had a unique birth experience in that his mother had seven miscarriages before giving birth to him, and he was born prematurely, seven months into her pregnancy.

2004: Howard enters the NBA draft as a high school senior and is selected by the Orlando Magic with the first overall pick. In his rookie season, he played in all 82 regular season games, averaging 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in 32.6 minutes per game, making him the youngest player in NBA history to average a double-double in a regular season game, the youngest to average a double-double in rebounds, and the youngest to average 20 rebounds in a single game. He was named to the 2005 All-Star Rookie Challenge and was a unanimous selection to the Rookie of the Year team.

2005 - 2006 Season: Howard gained weight during the 2005 offseason and again played all 82 regular season games in 2005-06, averaging 15.8 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, the league's highest rebound total, but the team once again missed the playoffs.

2006-2007 Season: Howard played in all 82 games for the third consecutive season, averaging 17.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and shooting 60.3 percent from the field.
