Premier League clubs will vote at their annual general meetings on June 6 to decide whether to scrap the VAR system by the 2024/25 season. Wolves have formally submitted the resolution, which requires the approval of 14 of the 20 clubs to pass.
Wolves have claimed that the Premier League will suffer irreparable damage in the future if it does not abolish VAR and urged other teams to listen to their fans. However, as it stands, key teams including Liverpool and Manchester United are against the proposal.
The Daily Telegraph contacted 10 clubs, none of which said they would agree to abolish VAR. some of them also strongly indicated they would oppose the proposal. A senior team source said there was no way they would abolish VAR and that all 19 other clubs would probably vote against Wolves' proposal in a show of solidarity.
On the other hand, many clubs hope that VAR can be improved in the future. Wolves have lost patience with VAR due to a series of misjudgments such as VAR refereeing. However, most teams believe that despite the problems, VAR is still an important tool to ensure the fairness of the game.
Teams in the Premier League are actively discussing how to improve the VAR system in order to minimize incorrect penalties and increase the accuracy and transparency of judgments. Although Wolves' proposal has gained attention, the abolition of VAR is unlikely from the current situation.
