West Ham United
Head coach David
Moyes (name)
In an interview, he spoke about the circumstances surrounding his departure and reflected on his time in charge at West Ham.
Moyes says one of his biggest successes has been keeping West Ham in the Premier League. "I had a lot of time in my first season at the club and the second season was definitely harder. I'm proud of my managerial career because you can't get a foothold in the middle of the Premier League unless you have a certain level of success. If I'd never won a trophy in that time I'd have been proud of it, but lifting a trophy means a more visible, tangible achievement. That win I led West Ham to was the first time an English manager had won a European tournament since Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008."
Moyes admitted that one of the most disappointing things was the criticism he received after the game against Crystal Palace. "We lost badly but we still decided to go and sign autographs for the fans. I was standing there and a West Ham fan came up to me and said that the trophy meant nothing and that we had only beaten two teams, Alkmaar and Fiorentina. I told him it was his right to voice his opinion but it really annoyed me. Different fans have different opinions, though, and I've had a lot of fans tell me that they all think West Ham did amazingly well."
Moyes believes everyone is ready for a change and says he feels it is time to move on. "You can see that there are very many critical voices against us at the moment and some of the criticism is right after some of the results we've had, but of course it's more praise for what we've achieved. I do see where fans stand when they question our style of play. I've been criticized but I've always wanted to play good soccer but I'm not a risk taker, I don't think I ever will be, and it's not a shameful thing to try and make the team better on the defensive side of the ball."
Moyes revealed that he plans to try some new challenges after working in Europe. "I want to go to some of the American tournaments to try something I've never done before and I think I'll go and watch the Brazil and Argentina games. Life goes on and I will move on. It's great to see the West Ham players playing well."
Moyes ended the interview by saying that when he leaves on Sunday he will be proud and sad at the same time because he feels that West Ham have done some of the building work and the foundations have been laid. Now, he is ready to rest and continue to follow the game of soccer.
