The national team today announced their preliminary squad for this year's Euros and, surprisingly, Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford failed to make the cut. England boss Gareth Southgate has since explained his selection decision.
In his press conference, Southgate spoke about the reasons for Rashford's fall from grace:
"On the subject of Rashford, I just think other players in the same position have done better than him this season, it's as simple as that."
Southgate has emphasized that many players in the same position have been much better for their clubs this season, and their contribution and form in the game were the main reasons why he chose them. Although Rashford has made significant contributions to the England national team over the past few seasons, he has failed to live up to expectations this season, which was key to Southgate's decision.
