Dortmund
Mond's 35-year-old veteran
Mats Hummels (1985-), Spanish footballer
's contract will end this summer and he is yet to decide on his future destination. Whether Hummels will be the next member of the 2014 World Cup winners to retire this summer, after Kroos, is still up in the air.
German media outlet Bild-Zeitung analyzed three options for Hummels' future:
Retirement:
Hummels may choose to retire after winning the Champions League. If Dortmund beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final on June 1, he might consider it the perfect end to his career. If Dortmund lose to Real Madrid, Hummels may also choose to play another year as he fails to fulfill his wish.
Stayed at Dortmund to renew his contract:
Hummels may choose to remain with Dortmund and extend his contract for another year. As his club, Dortmund holds a special emotional significance for him, and that emotional strength may motivate him to continue playing for the team.
Transfer to another league:
There is also a possibility that Hummels may choose to continue playing, but not at Dortmund. He could move to another team in the Bundesliga or a neighboring league. In order not to leave his son Ludwig, who lives in Munich, too far away, the Italian or Austrian leagues could be more practical options.
The Picture Post says that Hummels' decision on his future will not be made until after the Champions League final. There will be no crucial conversations between him, his agent and Dortmund sporting director Kael before that final. This duel at Wembley is a grandiose one for Hummels this season and possibly even for his career. Unlike Kroos, Hummels has no chance of playing in the Europa League, making this match particularly important.
