in a match against Ecuadorian team LDU Quito.
The European and American Club Challenge Cup is a tournament organized by UEFA and CONCACAF that began last year to promote exchanges between European and South American clubs. The tournament pits the winner of the UEFA Cup against the winner of the Copa Sudamericana, the second-tier club cup in South America, similar to the UEFA Cup in Europe.
Atlanta beat Leverkusen 3-0 in the UEFA Cup final to not only qualify for next season's UEFA Super Cup, but also earn a spot in the European and American Club Challenge Cup. In this tournament, they will face Copa Sudamericana champions LDU Quito, who are strong contenders for the Copa Sudamericana after a strong showing in the South American club competition.
Last July, the inaugural European and American Club Challenge Cup was played between Sevilla and Valley Independence. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes before Sevilla won 4-1 on penalties to become the inaugural tournament champions.
