Participation in the UEFA Champions League. Napoli, Inter Milan and Lazio all finished second in their groups, while AC Milan came third in their group to play in the UEFA Cup knockout playoffs. In the 1/8 finals, Napoli, Inter Milan and Lazio were all eliminated.
UEFA Cup:
Atlanta, Rome
Participation in the UEFA Cup. Atalanta topped the group and Roma finished second in the group. Atalanta knocked out Sporting Portugal, Liverpool and Marseille to reach the final, where they beat Leverkusen 3-0 to win the title. Roma defeated Leverkusen in the semifinals, and AC Milan was eliminated by Roma in the quarterfinals.

Participation in the UEFA Europa League. Fiorentina won three and drew three in the group stage to finish top, then eliminated Maccabi Haifa, Pilsen Victory and Bruges to reach the final.
A total of seven Serie A teams participated in the European competition this season, six of which made it out of the group stage. Despite poor performances in the Champions League, outstanding performances in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League helped Serie A to top the European coefficient rankings. Atalanta's victory in the UEFA Cup did honor to the Serie A teams and demonstrated the competitiveness of Serie A teams in Europe.
