Before being sacked, there were plans to overhaul the squad this summer, particularly on the attacking end. Sources revealed that Xavi wanted to freshen up the squad by getting rid of top scorer Robert Lewandowski (Lewin), loan players Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo and Vitor Roque, who joined early in January.
Xavi was sacked by Barcelona last week and led the team through their final game on Sunday, where Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-1. Xavi hopes to improve the team's overall performance through a series of personnel changes.
Leiva, 35, has two years left on his four-year contract with Barca, although the final year is dependent on the number of appearances he makes next season. Since joining Barca, Levan has scored 59 goals in 95 games and although he has previously expressed a desire to remain with the team, Xavi's plans include dropping him.
João Felix and João Cancelo are Barcelona loan players who will return to Atletico Madrid and Manchester City respectively. Sources have informed ESPN that Xavi are not keen on renewing the two players' loans.
Roque, who joined early, has scored two goals in 16 games. Xavi had previously stated that his intention was not for Roque to join mid-season, but rather for him to continue playing in his home town before the summer transfer window opened. However, Roque's early arrival did not have the desired effect.
Xavi, before he was sacked, planned to update Barcelona's squad with a series of personnel changes, especially on the attacking end. He wanted to drop Levan, Felix, Cancelo and Roque as a way to improve the team's overall competitiveness. However, with Xavi's departure, those plans could change as well.
