French national Olympic team

A large list of players for the Olympics was recently announced, and neither Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe nor Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann are on the list, replaced by the inclusion of two overage players, Lyon captain Alexandre Lacazette and Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

According to French media outlet L'Equipe, Lacazette's selection is due to the confirmation that Mbappe and Griezmann will not be playing in the Olympics. 33-year-old Lacazette had previously avoided discussing the issue, emphasizing his age and the need to be ready to have a good season. He said he had never discussed the matter with Henry, the national Olympic coach, despite the familiarity between him and Henry.

Lacazette, who was on vacation, learned of his call-up to the French national Olympics at the same time as everyone else after Henri announced the preliminary list of national Olympians, surprising both the player and the Lyon club. It is understood that the staff of the French national Olympics worked until the last minute to convince Mbappe and tried to win over Griezmann, but ultimately decided to call up Lacazette.
