Partner kicks back.
Arnold, 25, is six years on from making his England national team debut, but he has only played 24 games for the national team so far. Southgate said in a recent interview that Arnold needs to clarify his role at the Euros as competition for the right-back position is fierce.
Southgate revealed that he currently prefers to partner Arnold and Rice at the back. He said, "First of all, Arnold is very passionate about playing in an England national team shirt. Although his international performances haven't always gone well, he's a talented player. We've been working hard to find the right position for him and I'm sure he knows that. I was really happy to see him score."
Southgate continued, "The new role is something we are exploring and Arnold is eager to learn new things. He has been learning since I spoke to him about it a year ago. We will face different challenges in the Europa League competition, so we will need different solutions as well."
Southgate admitted that Arnold's attempts to play in the midfield position felt like a gamble and that the challenges in the Europa League are completely different to the warm-up games. He explained, "These are unknowns and with Gallagher, Maynu and Wharton you know exactly what they can do and their limitations. We need to try and find the balance. Rice will obviously be part of the starting line-up, but what kind of player will he be paired with? It could be different from game to game and we will make different choices depending on the situation."
