"I wouldn't say it exceeded expectations because when you prepare a good team you always hope for the best," Pioli told Mediaset.
"Obviously some of the lads were a bit nervous at first but once we broke the deadlock things got a lot easier. These boys have quality, they have talent, but most importantly they have a great attitude that they have to stick to.
"It's not to be taken for granted, sometimes it's easier to train young players than older ones, sometimes the opposite, but their attitude shows that the Milan youth camp is working very well.
"The young players are proving they can make a statement so they will be seen not only as emergency options but as realistic alternatives when needed. It's been a success for the club.
He added: "I still believe that Luca has a lot of strength and he has to believe in himself more and have more fire within him because he has the ability to be a great player. Of course, he had a difficult summer and didn't play, but now he's in good shape physically and mentally.
"He's strong in the box and can play with others as well, so does he have that ambition.
