The Football Association has officially announced that Portuguese-born marquee player
Fernando Santos
will be the head coach of the Azerbaijan national soccer team. The experienced 69-year-old coach will lead the Azerbaijani national team on a new journey.
Fernando Santos has had an illustrious soccer coaching career, having worked as a manager for clubs such as Porto, AEK Athens, Sporting Portugal and Benfica, as well as successfully leading the Portuguese and Greek national teams. In particular, he led Portugal to win Euro 2016 and the 2019 UEFA Nations League during his time in charge of the Portuguese national team between 2014 and 2022, a period that became the highlight of his coaching career.
After leaving the Portuguese national team, Fernando Santos briefly coached the Polish national team and was the head coach of Turkish giants Besiktas between the beginning of this year and April. Now, he is about to start a new chapter with the Azerbaijan national team, where his rich experience and tactical wisdom will undoubtedly bring new hope and motivation.
