Head Rossetti made it clear that this year's tournament will strictly prohibit players from surrounding the referee to argue. This new rule aims to enhance the fairness and impartiality of the tournament and ensure its smooth running.
Speaking at the conference, Rossetti said, "The referees at this year's Euros are some of the best in the world. In the overall ranking of referees, the level is higher than in the last Euro, and we are very satisfied with that. We chose the referees based on one criterion and that is the level of enforcement."
Prior to the start of the Euros, members of the UEFA Refereeing Committee visited the bases of all 24 participating teams to explain to the players the standards of enforcement at this year's Euros. Emphasis was placed on communication on the pitch and respect for the referee. Rossetti noted that referees will communicate with team captains during matches to explain key penalties and VAR referee decisions. However, only the team captain or a designated player (another player can be designated when the captain is the goalkeeper) can communicate with the referee, and other players must keep their distance and not surround the referee in an argument. Any offensive and controversial words or actions will be severely penalized.
Rossetti said, "We discussed this rule with all the referees at Euro 2024 and discussed the matter with the UEFA Referees Committee, the best players, former players and coaches. We unanimously agreed to do this and informed the participating teams, who supported it. We did this not only for the sake of the referees or the UEFA Referees Committee, but also for the image of soccer and the next generation. These meetings with the national teams were very fruitful, all the players had a good interaction and they wanted to know how the referees communicate with the captains in this open dialog and they were very happy with it. I am sure this will become a model for the new era of soccer."
This rule will not only help to uphold the authority of the referee, but will also help to improve the flow and spectacle of the game. Players will be asked to deal with referee decisions more calmly and respectfully, thus setting a good example for younger players. Rossetti's statement sets the stage for a positive and fair playing environment for the upcoming Euro 2024, and it is expected that all participating teams and players will abide by the new regulations and work together to present an exciting soccer spectacle.
