August 18, Information Flash. Barbara Charon, a music industry personality, officially stepped into the Chelsea boardroom in June of this year. In a recent interview with CBS, she shared her unsettling relationship with Chelsea and her impressions of the club's owner, Abu.
Getting to know Chelsea for the first time
Back in the late 1970s, Charon first arrived in England with no knowledge of soccer. She spent many nights at a London residence on Sloane Street (just two miles from Stamford Bridge), indulging in televised soccer matches in her spare time, and has been interested in the sport ever since. She quickly fell under the spell of Chelsea and bought a season ticket every season without hesitation.
The glory of the Abu era
Abramovich's arrival brought a sea change to Chelsea, bringing in top players such as Lampard, Drogba and Makelele. The day they won the Champions League in Munich was undoubtedly the most memorable moment in Charon's life. She recalls that Bayern's fans were also extraordinarily friendly that season, with the only irritation being that the announcer's tendency to be too obvious when Bayern scored. Bayern took the lead in the 83rd minute of the game and Chalon eagerly sent an exit message to her friends, but Drogba's goal five minutes later made it all worthwhile. That game, and Torres' goal against Barcelona, have become lasting memories in her mind.
Board of Directors Tour
Charon has known Times journalist and Chelsea fan Danny Finkelstein for more than 20 years.Finkelstein is close friends with Jonny Goldstein - a member of the Burley Consortium - and they would like to invite the two fans to join the board. Although many clubs have explored this option, few have actually put it into practice.
When Finkelstein made Charon an offer, she accepted without hesitation. Their first priority was to establish fan contact on both official and unofficial levels. She was very impressed with Burley, who was not only gracious, but always answered emails and was open to suggestions. The new owners have been extremely supportive both on and off the field, especially with the alliance with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Jonny Goldstein's contributions off the field. Importantly, they want the fans to be actively involved rather than sitting on the sidelines. After a rough patch, Charron is looking forward to the future.
Looking ahead to the new season
For the upcoming season, Charron is confident in both the men's and women's head coaches. She expects the men's soccer team to excel in the Premier League and shine in the Champions League. The team has a number of good players and she is excited by the addition of Sterling and Koulibaly. She was also impressed by Cucurelia's excellent performance against Tottenham Hotspur.
