据体坛周报记者马德兴透露，在本届东亚杯中，中国足协可能会根据对手情况的变化进行调整，不再派遣U23国足参赛，而是以成年国家队的形式，以中国男足选拔队的名义出战。这一消息一出，立刻引起了广泛关注。
韩国职业足球联合会也于近日宣布，为了备战东亚杯，K联赛的22至25轮赛事将进行调整。调整后，韩国队主教练保罗本托将可以组建一支由K联赛精英球员组成的成年国家队。由于孙兴慜、黄喜灿等海外球员将缺席本次赛事，韩国队的阵容将主要由K联赛和亚洲其他联赛的韩国球员组成，包括效力于中超山东泰山队的孙准浩和北京国安队的姜祥佑。尽管二人尚未确定是否入选，但本次赛事预计将成为保罗本托确定韩国队世界杯最终名单的考察时机。
东亚杯的对手中国队，将面对由联赛精英球员组成的韩日成年国家队。即便U23国足带上三名超龄球员，也难以与对手抗衡。毕竟，东亚杯是世界足联认证的A级赛事，U23国足如果在本次赛事中表现不佳，中国队的排名积分将受到影响。在最新的FIFA排名中，中国队已跌出亚洲前10，世界排名第78，创造了近4年来的最低排名。面对韩日的本土精英球员，U23国足的压力显而易见。
值得一提的是，本次东亚杯将由日本足协接手，日本足协也将原定的日本U21国家队改为成年国家队出战。这无疑增加了中国足协重新考虑参赛队的压力，以保证赛事的严肃性和重要性。毕竟，这是东亚足球联盟最高水平的赛事。
为了保持目前的世界足联排名，中国队至少需要争夺亚洲杯赛分档的第二档次。如果继续派遣U23国足出战，考虑到韩国队将派遣“准国家队”阵容、日本队将派遣“二队”阵容，中国队争夺积分的几率将进一步降低。因此，中国足协决定改变此前4月份的战略，不再以U23国足出战，而是决定派遣“国家选拔队”出战。
在主帅的问题上，中国足协决定让原U23国足主帅扬科维奇率队出征。这样一来，扬科维奇避免了不必要的尴尬，因为他仍然是U23国足的主教练，此次只是“选拔队暂时主教练”。这与三年前李铁率中国队出战东亚杯赛的情况相似。另一方面，中国队此次派遣不再是U23部队，而是“选拔队”，与韩国队、日本队均未派遣各自最强阵容出战属于完全对等的状况。
因此，中国队此次征召包括张玉宁、高天意、吴曦等众多国脚出战也就不难理解。当然，由于扬科维奇此前一直是99年龄段U23部队的主教练，对麾下的99年龄段球员相对更为熟悉，此次出战东亚杯赛的球队基本结构可能会以U23球员为主，再加上远不止三名超龄球员，这某种程度上也是未来新的中国男足国家队的基本框架。毕竟，原本征战12强赛的国足需要新鲜血液、需要大面积的更新换代。
目前，出征东亚杯赛的名单正在草拟之中。在中国足协最终名单确定之前，各种可能性都存在。但有一点可以肯定，即代表中国出战东亚杯赛将不会再是U23国足！
