The Korean Football Association (KFA) announced on June 19 that a friendly match between South Korea and Canada will be played on June 27 at 04:00 a.m. (Korean local time) at the BMO Stadium in Toronto, Canada.
The campaign is not only a soccer feast, but also a warm-up for the Women's World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand next July. The aim of the Korean team's warm-up is to test the performance of their own players against the Canadian team, which is a well-rounded team with excellent heading skills. It is worth noting that the tournament coincides with the FIFA Women's National Teams Week, when players from both countries as well as those traveling to Europe will be available to play.
The Canadian women's soccer team is currently ranked 6th in the FIFA women's rankings, 11 spots ahead of 17th-ranked South Korea. Since 1995, Canada has reached seven consecutive Women's World Cup final rounds. In women's soccer, Canada has particularly shined in the Olympics. At last year's Tokyo Olympics, they reached the final after defeating the world's best team, the United States, and eventually won the gold medal over Sweden.
In the women's national soccer team's history of meetings, South Korea has played Canada eight times with only one win and seven losses, with the lone victory occurring in January 2013 at the Four Nations Tournament in Yongchuan, China. In October of the same year, South Korea faced Canada on the road, only to lose by a 0-3 score.
