Ligue 1 resumed in the early hours of the 29th, with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) winning a thrilling first-round clash. Brazilian star Nima was shown a red card for an illegal action, while Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in stoppage time to help PSG turn back Strasbourg 2-1 and consolidate their position at the top of the table.
While Argentine star Lionel Messi is still recuperating after winning the World Cup, Mbappe and Nima, two World Cup-missing superstars, made their debuts. Mbappe broke the deadlock with a penalty in the 14th minute, while Nima helped the visitors equalize with an ominous gift in the 51st minute. However, Nima received a yellow for a vicious elbow in the 61st minute, and a minute later was sent off for a penalty for a "water ball" in the penalty area, turning two yellows into one red. Despite being down a man, PSG kept up their attack and finally in stoppage time, Mbappe hit a penalty kick to seal the win for the team.
After the match, Mbappe said, "The injury from the World Cup final still affects me, but the disappointment of the French team shouldn't cost PSG, it's two different environments and I'm still determined to win all the titles for PSG." It's worth noting that Mbappe scored 32 goals in 2022, making him the player with the most goals in a single season in Ligue 1 since Fontaine (35) in 1958.
