In the new EPL season, the focus of attention seems to be on the battle between Arsenal and Manchester City, however, a dark horse called Newcastle is quietly rising in the shadows. In Monday's (26th) match, Newcastle swept away Lee St City by 3-0, jumping to the second place in the table, and this new team is expected to create a radical change in the Premier League.
Since being acquired by a Saudi Arabian sovereign fund last October, Newcastle have rapidly expanded their strength and have been unstoppable this season. In the match against Leicester City, Keith Wood, Micky Armstrong and Julien Zuillanton each scored a goal to establish a 3-0 lead in the first half.
Central midfielder Miguel Amirão has scored nine goals in 16 Premier League games this season, a figure that equals his previous total of goals in four seasons with Newcastle. The 28-year-old Paraguayan international's explosion has been a key force in Newcastle's high-flying campaign.
It is worth mentioning that Newcastle boss Eddie Hood has led his team to 21 Premier League victories this season, making him the third English coach to win more than 20 Premier League matches in a single year after Kieran Keegan and Evans. Kieran Keegan won 24 Premier League matches in 1994 and 23 in 1995, while Evans won 22 matches in 1996 during his tenure at Liverpool.
Although Newcastle are currently one point ahead of third-placed Manchester City, their current position in second place is not secure considering they have played two more games than City.
