Jose Kiwanis' hormones explode, sends FIFA official concussed with an elbow
Uruguay failed to advance despite beating Ghana in the just-concluded World Cup group stage, and players were emotional after the match. Among them, striker Kayuni slammed the VAR equipment to pieces out of anger, while the behavior of midfielder Jose Giovannis was even more outrageous. While leaving the field, he elbowed a FIFA official in the back of the head, a scene that was caught on camera in clear evidence. The 27-year-old defender, who plays for Madrid, could face a suspension of up to 15 games.
When the whistle blew for the end of the match, the Uruguayan players, led by Kavanagh, were dissatisfied with a number of controversial decisions and went up to the referee, Schubert, and even prevented him from leaving. Eventually, FIFA staff intervened before the players were allowed to leave the field.
It was at this point that Jose Kiwanis once again charged forward and went after the referee, inadvertently hitting the tournament supervisor in the back of the head. Facing the camera, Jose Kiwanis also exploded into foul language.
The video, which quickly went viral online, has caught the attention of FIFA, which is expected to launch an investigation. If Jose Kiwanis is found guilty, he will likely be suspended for 15 games.
The incident is similar to the case of Suarez biting Italian centerpiece Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup, for which Suarez received a three-month global ban. Jose Giovannis looks set to face the same fate.
