In Saturday's (3) dawn showdown, Serbia and Switzerland in Group G engaged in a fierce battle, with both sides featuring attacking soccer. In the end, Switzerland beat Serbia 3-2 to advance to the second place of the group and become the last team to advance to the round of 16.
Meanwhile, Brazil managed to overtake Switzerland in the same group with a better goal difference, despite failing to win the 0-1 match against Cameroon, and will face South Korea.
The only way for Serbia to advance in this match was to win. They missed a good opportunity in the first half when Andy Carschoff's shot hit the post and bounced off the post. Then, in the 20th minute, their defense was in trouble, and Switzerland's veteran Sutton Szakely opened the scoring with a shot.
However, just six minutes later, Serbia achieved the equalizer when Dusin Tedić's precise cross from the left was headed in by Aleksandar Mizunovic to make it 1-1 and boost the team's morale. Shortly after, Dusin Hahović added another goal to make it 2-1.
Switzerland didn't give up and equalized again near the end of the first half when Schwendimer's cross from the right was headed in at the near post by Bilbao to make it 2-2.
Less than three minutes after the break, Switzerland took the lead again when Fiona made it 3-2 with a great finish, and although Serbia continued to attack, they often fell short of scoring, and Switzerland won 3-2, advancing to the Round of 16, where they will meet Portugal.
In the other match in the same group, Brazil, who had already locked up the right to go out, played with a substitute lineup and had a goal scored by Cameroonian striker Abubakar in stoppage time, and despite losing 0-1, they still advanced to the top of the group and will face off with South Korea.
