The transfer market of the Red Devils has once again made waves, just last Sunday (17), the Red Devils officially announced that they have reached an agreement with Dutch powerhouse Ajax on the transfer of Lisindo Martinez. The Argentinean international will soon complete his medical and get a work permit to officially join Manchester United. It is reported that the transfer fee for this deal is as high as 55 million pounds, making Lisindo Martinez the second most expensive defender in the history of Manchester United.
With a height of just 175cm, Lisindo Martinez will be the shortest midfielder in the Premier League, a size advantage that sparked concerns from celebrity star Rio Ferdinand. However, a statement released on the same day by Manchester United and Ajax confirmed the deal, with United reportedly paying an upfront transfer fee of £46.8 million, plus bonus clauses, bringing the total value to £55 million. The figure is second only to United's £80 million purchase of Harry Magooni, again setting a record transfer fee for a defender in the team. The 24-year-old star earns a whopping £120,000 a week and, more importantly, will have the chance to reunite with former Ajax coach Tannhäuser.
Lyszendo Martinez is capable of playing in the center, left wing and defensive midfield, and played mainly as a central midfielder for Ajax last season. Although he may face a height disadvantage in the Premier League, his header stats in the Dutch league are quite impressive, recording 79 successful headers, even more than the 75 of Harry Makouni, who joined Manchester United.
Commenting on this, legendary Manchester United stalwart Rio Ferdinand said, "He will need to be physically well prepared to face those Premier League wingers who are taller than six feet, such as Aynin Xalant and Davin Newnes. With big strikers like Newcastle Kieswetter, can the size of Lisindo Martinez cope on a weekly basis?"
According to statistics, there are 8 tall centers over 190cm tall in the EPL this season. Nonetheless, United fans need not worry too much, as Lisin du Matinis is good at organizing and passing, and his header stats in the Dutch Eredivisie are quite impressive, recording 79 successful headers, which is more than enough to make up for his height disadvantage.
