After the Europa League group match between Belgium and Ukraine, Belgian player Castagne was interviewed by RTL. Castagne expressed his understanding and feelings about the booing from the fans at the end of the match.
Castagne began by saying that he could understand the fans' disappointment with the team's performance. "I can understand their disappointment with the performance, but we still advanced." He emphasized that despite a slightly inferior performance in this match, the Belgian team still managed to advance without conceding a goal.
He mentioned that the support of the fans is very important for the team. "We advanced and for sure it will be easier with the support of the fans." Castagne recalled the warm atmosphere created by the fans against Romania and said that the atmosphere at the start of that game was also very good.
However, he also acknowledged that not all Belgians feel the same way about the team. "We know it's not how the whole of Belgium feels." He emphasized that the team is not against the whole of Belgium because of the booing of some of the fans.
Castagne admitted that the players felt a little angry about being treated with boos, but that it was a normal reaction. "We wanted to thank the fans but were booed like that, it's normal to feel a little bit angry, as we did." Nonetheless, he said the team will focus on the next game and that they did their best.
Finally, Castagne said that the team expects strong support, but if the fans are angry because of something that happened, Belgium will still fight for their country as a united team, with or without the support of the fans. "We expect strong support and hopefully we will get it, but if they get angry because of something that happened, then we will fight for Belgium as a united team, with or without the support of the fans."
