On Monday, UEFA made a heavy announcement of tough sanctions against the Russian soccer community. The sanctions list covers the Russian men's and women's soccer teams, as well as various soccer clubs, making it clear that these teams will be banned from European soccer for a long period of time.
Russia had previously been disqualified from the World Cup play-offs as a result of FIFA's decision. In the upcoming UEFA Europa League tournament in June, Russia was originally in Group B against Iceland, Israel and Albania, but UEFA eliminated them outright, relegating them to the bottom of Group C.
In addition, UEFA rejected Russia's bid to host the UEFA Nations Cup in 2028 and 2032. Russian soccer clubs were banned from participating in European club competitions at all levels for the years 2022-2023, and their points coefficients will be based on the lowest scores of the last five years.
For women's soccer, the Russian team was disqualified from the 2022 UEFA Women's World Cup, and the previously eliminated Portuguese women's soccer team was substituted, advancing directly to Group C. The Russian team was also banned from participating in the Women's World Cup Euro zone qualifying rounds. At the same time, the Russian women's soccer team was also banned from participating in the Women's World Cup European Zone qualifying rounds, resulting in the original Group E teams reduced from six to five.
