The 49-year-old Stam, who played for Manchester United between 1998 and 2001, has been a manager since his retirement, having coached Reading, Flying Yanno and FC Cincinnati. Although he can only be Tanhag's deputy in this return to United, he said he doesn't mind: "If they need me, I won't hesitate to take it, United is also a part of my life, I had brilliant seasons there and won the championships, and I am willing to do my best if I can help them."

Stam, who has been unemployed since being fired in Cincinnati, said he would do everything at the discretion of United's top brass and manager.
