As the deadline for the transfer registration window for the new season approaches, numerous soccer clubs are nervously dealing with wage arrears in a bid to get out of this deadline. Wuhan Three Town and Cangzhou Lions in the Chinese Super League and Guangzhou in the Chinese Football Association Super League are among them.

Among this group of clubs, Guangzhou, which has won the Chinese Super League title eight times, appears to be particularly active. To cope with the shortage of funds, the Guangzhou team, from the club owner to the first-line players, was all hands on deck and even organized an offline sale on Dec. 17 to sell the club's equipment.

The biggest wage arrears that Guangzhou is currently facing is around €1 million for former coach Carnavaro. It would undoubtedly be a daunting task to fill this gap through merchandising alone. In the tight financial chain of the Guangzhou team, even the Salvadoran coach and three assistant coaches are ready to leave Chongqing Tongliang Dragon.

The key to whether Guangzhou can pass the FA's access audit is whether Cannavaro can accept the club's proposal to repay the salary arrears in installments. If the two sides can not reach an agreement, Guangzhou team in the new season may face the embarrassing situation of no Cannavaro.

But getting Cannavaro to accept repayment in installments will not be easy for Guangzhou. Since Cannavaro returned from the Chinese epidemic, coaching Serie A Udinese has been a few months, the end of the season but failed to get a contract extension. In the past, the 12 million euros annual salary from the Guangzhou team now has no place, Cannavaro is naturally not willing to give up this arrears of wages. There are even rumors that on Christmas Eve, Cannavaro may be looking forward to the Guangzhou team to pay the arrears to celebrate this Western holiday!
