Former Brazilian soccer superstar Oscar dos Santos, who bid farewell to Shanghai Port earlier this month, drawing an end to his eight-year career in the Chinese Super League, has now set a new course, officially announcing his return to his hometown of São Paulo, signing a three-year deal with the club.
Oscar, 33, began his soccer career at São Paulo's youth academy, playing for one team between 2008 and 2010, before moving to Sporting Clube Internacional, another team in the Barclays Premier League. In 2012, he joined English Premier League giants Chelsea, where he collected two Premier League titles, one EFL Cup title and one Europa League title.
In January 2017, 25-year-old Oscar moved from Chelsea to Shanghai Port for a transfer fee of 60 million euros, a move that created an uproar in the soccer world. Some criticized him for abandoning the Premier League for the Chinese Super League as "self-destructive". However, when he left Shanghai Port, it was rumored that he might continue to invest in China, but in the end he chose São Paulo, signing a three-year deal with a salary of R$24 million (HK$30 million) per year, which is far less than what he was offered at Shanghai Port.
Oscar has reportedly earned a total salary of 192 million euros (HK$1.6 billion) during his eight-year career at Shanghai Port. Netizens have commented that he has made a lot of money and now wants to "give back to the people", so he returned to Brazil.
