At the crack of dawn on Thursday, a remarkable drama unfolded on the soccer fields of the European Union. Aston Villa's key player, Tyrone Mings, showed exceptional bravery in Bruges. He had the audacity to "master" the goalkeeper in the penalty area in an attempt to take control of the ball. The move was penalized by the referee with a 12-yard penalty. Unfortunately, Villa lost 0-1 in this "gift" of a game, and this year's winning streak in the UEFA Europa League came to an abrupt end.

Despite Villa's victories in the first three rounds of fixtures, the away trip this campaign suffered a 51st minute turning point. At the time, Villa goalkeeper Damien Martinez flicked a lob over the bar and Tyrone Minns reacted in a fluid manner to try and turn the situation around. He restarted inside the penalty area and just as he signaled for the referee, he blew his whistle out of nowhere to award a 12-yarder. Brugge's Winnagan then put the ball into the empty net with a pinpoint shot to seal the 1-0 win.

After the match, Villa's leader Emery expressed his disbelief at Tyrone Mings' mistake: "Mings' mistake was baffling, it was the worst mistake I've ever seen in my career, and I've only encountered it once in my life, and that was today." In fact, a similar scenario occurred in last season's Europa League. Arsenal stalwart Gabriele Magathis had also "mastered" the lob in a Bayern Munich match, but the referee considered it a "rookie mistake" that didn't benefit his team and, as a matter of common sense, shouldn't have been a 12-yarder. Therefore, the referee did not make such a call.
