In a recent unexpected flight experience, the Nigerian soccer team arrived in Libya this month only to land at an abandoned airport. Faced with a lack of water, food and no internet connection, the team and players spent over 15 hours waiting in agony. In desperation, the Nigerian team announced the suspension of the match. However, in a statement on Saturday (26), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that Nigeria had won the match 3-0 and therefore gained the crucial three points.
On the same day, the CAF disciplinary department noted that the Libyan side had a responsibility to provide reasonable hospitality to the visiting team, including sending a special vehicle to transport the players. As a result, the Libyan team swallowed a 0-3 defeat and were fined 50,000 dollars. The Libyan Football General Complaints Department claimed that Nigeria had visited them as the visiting team during the same international period. In addition, their flight was severely delayed due to poor arrangements by the home team which led to their arrival hours before the match. Rumor has it that the Libyan FA is suspected to have taken deliberate retaliatory measures which turned out to be a farce.
