Speaking on the Sticky Football Podcast, Gary Neville has been waxing lyrical about Welbeck's recent exceptional performances. He was outspoken in stating that Welbeck's form has clearly outperformed that of all of United's current strikers and was convinced that United's decision to release the player in the first place was a misstep. Roy Keane, on the other hand, disagrees and has seriously countered Neville's views, arguing that the mere fact that the player has done so well since his departure is not a good enough reason why he should have been retained in the first place.
Neville remains adamant that Welbeck will be indispensable if United's squad expands to 24 and they intend to keep five or six strikers. But Keane is not convinced, saying that sometimes players do have a spring in their step after leaving the club, but that doesn't mean they have the ability to adapt to the demanding environment at United. The two United legends had a lively discussion around the issue, with each having their own opinion.
